draw.io: free alternative to Microsoft Visio — online / desktop
If you want to draw flowcharts or architecture diagrams without installing software, this is currently the most reliable online option; for large professional diagrams or multi-user collaboration, use the desktop build or the official cloud.

Hands-on test (2026-11-03, v32.6.9)
- Self-hosted on our site, v32.6.9: opening the browser drops you into the editor; Chinese UI available via ?lang=zh; files are stored locally in the browser by default
- Desktop 1280×800 hands-on test: File/Edit/View/Arrange menus, sticky notes, the shape library, and the grid canvas all work, with no JS errors
- 390×844 mobile hands-on test: canvas and bottom toolbar are usable and the shape library collapses into a drawer; complex dragging is still less smooth than on desktop
- Inside the editor you can create/open local files; the export entry is in the 'File' menu (this round only verified the entry exists, not each export format)
Self-hosted static build; the cloud login/collaboration features are unavailable
Best for
- Drawing flowcharts/architecture diagrams ad hoc
- Opening a .vsdx file to view someone else's diagram
- Not wanting to install a desktop client
Not for
- Real-time multi-user collaboration (requires the official cloud or a self-hosted backend)
- Ultra-large engineering diagrams / professional deliverables

How to get started
- Click "Use online" above — it runs in your browser, no signup required.
- Run the full workflow (open → edit → export) on a throwaway file first, to confirm format compatibility.
- Once you accept its limits, migrate your daily workflow; keep the original software as a fallback for critical deliverables.
