DesignCraft Is Free and Open Source — Lay Out A4 in Your Browser (2026-10)
Most people searching for an “InDesign alternative” have one concrete job: lay out a single A4 page and deliver it. The short answer: it can replace InDesign for single pages and short booklets, but print-grade delivery (bleed, spot colors, preflight) is not there yet.
This is an independent third-party guide, not an official site. DesignCraft is free and open source; please download it through official channels.
Adobe InDesign vs DesignCraft: the whole comparison in one table
| Dimension | Adobe InDesign | DesignCraft |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Subscription | Free and open source |
| Install required? | Desktop client | Web version needs no install or signup; desktop version also available |
| What you get on open | Blank document / templates | Welcome screen + paper presets (Letter/Legal/Tabloid/Letter Half/A4/A5) |
| Panels | Pages / Layers / styles / preflight | Tested: Pages and Layers panels present |
| Multi-page documents | A native strength (books, magazines, long documents) | Supports multiple pages, but long-document and master-page capabilities are unverified |
| Print delivery | Bleed, spot colors, PDF/X, preflight | No complete prepress capability observed; do not use for production printing |

DesignCraft details were tested by us on the official web version (v0.11.0) on 2026-10-21; InDesign details reflect its public product offering.
What it cannot replace (read this before deciding)
- Print-grade PDF/X export, bleed and spot colors
- Book/magazine-level long-document flow (master pages, chapters, spread styles)
- InDesign plugins and IDML round-tripping
- Chinese typography details (punctuation compression, line-breaking rules)
Migration cost: three steps to decide whether to switch
- Lay out one typical page first (A4 single page or spread) and export it to see whether the deliverable is acceptable.
- Separate “needs printing” work from “only needs a PDF/image” work: the latter can migrate first.
- Do not migrate long documents yet — that is exactly where InDesign is hardest to replace.
Who it is for / who it is not for
- Good for: single-page or short page-count layouts (posters, one-pagers, simple booklets), screen-only delivery or ordinary PDFs, and people who want to try it with zero install.
- Not for: long book or magazine documents, production print delivery, or projects that need IDML and InDesign team collaboration.
Honest limits: DesignCraft is currently early alpha, updated weekly by the official team, and features will change. The UI is mostly English (PdfCraft renders Chinese as boxes). Work in the online version lives only in the browser and is lost when the tab closes.
