PdfCraft: 16 Tools in Your Browser, No File Uploads (2026-10)
People searching for a “free PDF editor” care about two things: will my file be uploaded, and do OCR and merging actually work. PdfCraft's answer is blunt: everything runs in your local browser.
This is an independent third-party guide, not an official site. PdfCraft is free and open source; please download it through official channels.
Adobe Acrobat vs PdfCraft: the whole comparison in one table
| Dimension | Adobe Acrobat | PdfCraft |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Acrobat Pro is subscription-based; the online version has quotas | Free and open source |
| Where files go | Processed in the cloud (online version) | Never leaves your machine; processed in-browser with WebAssembly |
| Feature entries | Read / edit / merge / OCR / sign / forms / protect | 16 entries tested: read/write, merge and split, annotate, tables, forms, OCR, encrypt and sign, accessibility check |
| Offline | Needs internet to activate | Works offline (local static server) |
| Deep editing | Body-text reflow, font replacement, fine-grained object editing | Workbench-style operations, not layout-level editing |
| UI language | Chinese | Chinese renders as boxes; features still work |
| Large files | Cloud processing, limited by upload bandwidth | 38MB file loaded in 3.4 seconds in our test (served directly from R2) |
PdfCraft details were tested by us on the official web version (v0.11.0) on 2026-10-21, including a 38MB file load test; Acrobat details reflect its public product offering.
What it cannot replace (read this before deciding)
- Deep editing at the body-text reflow level (changing paragraphs like Word)
- Acrobat's print preflight and PDF/X
- A Chinese UI (renders as boxes)
- Enterprise-grade document permissions and auditing
Migration cost: three steps to decide whether to switch
- Run the three most common tasks first: merge, split, OCR, and confirm the output quality is acceptable.
- Prefer it for sensitive files — no upload is its core advantage over online tools.
- PDFs that need body text changed still belong in Acrobat / Word; do not force it.
Who it is for / who it is not for
- Good for: people who merge and split, add watermarks, run OCR, fill forms, encrypt and sign, or handle sensitive files they do not want to upload.
- Not for: formal publishing workflows that need body-text reflow, prepress preflight, or a Chinese UI.
Honest limits: PdfCraft is currently early alpha, updated weekly by the official team, and features will change. The UI is mostly English (PdfCraft renders Chinese as boxes). Work in the online version lives only in the browser and is lost when the tab closes.
Frequently asked questions
- Will my file be uploaded? No. All processing happens in your browser via WebAssembly, so the file never leaves your machine (including our 38MB test).
- Do all 16 feature entries work? The tested entries — read/write, merge and split, annotate, tables, forms, OCR, encrypt-and-sign, accessibility check — are available and their basic flows run; deep editing depth is limited (see "What it cannot replace" above).
- Does the web version save my work? No. Work in the online version lives only in the browser and is lost when the tab closes; export it on the spot or use the desktop build.
- What about the Chinese UI? The Chinese interface renders as boxes, but the features still work; the English UI is normal.
- Good for formal printing? Not yet: no PDF/X or preflight, so keep print-delivery work in Acrobat.
- Can it run offline? The desktop build can run offline from local static files; the web build needs the network.
