GridCraft Review: A Free Open-Source Microsoft Excel Alternative You Can Open in the Browser
Most people searching for “GridCraft” want to confirm two things: what it is, and where on the official site they can open it directly. Both answers are below — if you want to use it right now, click “Use it online” above; no download needed.
Version: our hosted online build is v0.10.0 (matches upstream latest).
This is an independent third-party guide, not an official site; please download through official channels.
What is GridCraft (in one line: a free Excel alternative)
Spreadsheet tool with Excel-style formulas, functions, tables, and charts.
Can it replace Microsoft Excel?
Positioning-wise it targets Excel, but its current maturity is “in development”, so it is not simply a complete replacement. It is better suited to: office users doing data cleanup, budget sheets, and simple analysis.
Official maturity figures (checked 2026-10-21)
GridCraft also generates its coverage tables automatically with cargo xtask parity, and both documents say they measure breadth only:
| Metric | Value | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Excel commands implemented | 274 / 290 = 94.5% | Measured (auto-generated from crates/engine/src/catalog.rs) |
| Functions available by name | 513 / 523 = 98.1% | Measured (docs/function-parity.md) |
| Functions actually working | 504 / 523 = 96.4% | Measured (registered by name ≠ actually runs; 19 short) |
| Breakdown by feature tab | File/Home/Draw/Page Layout/Formulas = 100%; Insert 68%, Data 82%, Review 83% | Measured (docs/parity-checklist.md) |

docs/parity-checklist.md mentions that “the overall assessment (depth, fidelity, effort) lives in target-app-parity.md”, but that file does not exist yet. In other words — GridCraft has not published its own estimate of how much real work it can do. So the 94.5% cannot be compared with WordCraft's 55%: one is command coverage, the other is a weighted estimate of the share of real work; they measure different things. How to get started
- Install it in one click with ArtCraft Launcher (it picks the right build for your OS and keeps everything updated), or download it directly from the official site / GitHub linked above.
- Take an unimportant file through a complete pass (import → edit → export) to confirm format compatibility and acceptable performance.
- Only then migrate your daily workflow; for important projects, always keep the original software or file as a fallback.
Who it is for / who it is not for
- Good for: office users doing data cleanup, budget sheets, and simple analysis.
- Not for: professional, heavy workflows that depend on a complex add-in ecosystem or need long-term, stable delivery (for now, keep using the original software).
